Frequently asked questions

How is HSK 7–9 different from HSK 1–6?+

It is one examination awarding three bands rather than three separate tests, and it adds translation and a much larger vocabulary. HSK 3.0 restructured the upper levels so that HSK 6 is no longer the ceiling.

Do I need HSK 7–9 to study in China?+

Most undergraduate programmes taught in Chinese ask for HSK 4 to 5, and postgraduate programmes commonly ask for HSK 5 to 6. HSK 7–9 is aimed at graduate research, translation and specialist professional work.
