The generator pulls every distinct word out of the text or subtitle file you give it. English is split on spaces and punctuation. Japanese and Chinese are split into words with your browser’s built-in word segmenter, which keeps only words written in kana or characters. Each word becomes one card, and duplicates are removed.
Words that appear in our free JLPT, HSK or CEFR decks get the same back as in those decks: the reading, part of speech and meaning. Words outside those lists, including conjugated forms, get a blank back for you to fill in. The download message says how many were matched.
The download is a tab-separated file with Front, Back and Tags columns, the format Anki imports directly. Nothing is uploaded: the words are extracted in your browser.
Good sources to try
Subtitles from a show you are watching, a news article, or a chapter of a book you are reading. Turning the words of something you actually want to understand into cards means every card has a reason to be learned.
