The checker splits your text into words and looks each one up in two CEFR word lists: the CEFR-J Wordlist for A1 to B2 and the Octanove Vocabulary Profile for C1 and C2. A word listed at more than one level counts at the easiest one, and regular endings are stripped before the lookup, so “measures” and “approximating” still find their entries.
Words on neither list are counted as C1, not ignored: an unusual word is part of what makes a text hard. The level shown is that of the 90th-percentile word, meaning 90% of the words in the passage sit at or below it. A single rare word will not lift a text a whole level; a passage full of B2 vocabulary will read as B2.
What it does not measure
Only vocabulary. Grammar, sentence length and how familiar the topic is all change how hard a text feels, and none of them are scored. Names and brand-new words are off-list and count as C1, so a news article heavy with names can read a little harder than it is.
Who uses it
Teachers checking whether an article suits a class before assigning it, and learners looking for reading that is just above their level: mostly words they know, with a few to learn.
