How to read pinyin tones

Mandarin Chinese has four tones plus a neutral tone. Tone marks sit on the main vowel of each syllable:

  • 1st tone (ā) — high and level.
  • 2nd tone (á) — rising, like asking a question.
  • 3rd tone (ǎ) — dipping down then up.
  • 4th tone (à) — sharp falling.
  • Neutral tone (a) — light and unstressed.
