The checker first works out which language the text is in. Japanese and Chinese are split into words with your browser’s built-in word segmenter; English is split on spaces and punctuation. Each word is then matched against a vocabulary list: JLPT N5–N1 for Japanese, HSK 1–9 for Chinese, CEFR A1–C2 for English.
The level shown is that of the 90th-percentile matched word: 90% of the listed vocabulary in the text sits at or below it. Words that are on no list are shown separately and don’t move the estimate.
Reading the result
The estimate covers vocabulary only, not grammar or sentence length. Treat it as a quick check that a text is in the right range, not as an exam score. The breakdown by level shows where the harder words are, and the unlisted words are often the names and specialist terms worth looking up first.
