过于
guòyú
too
Structure
过于 + Adjective/Psychological Verb
How it works
The word 过于 is an adverb meaning 'too' or 'excessively.' It is more formal than 太 (tài) and is typically used to describe situations where a quality or action has exceeded a reasonable or desired limit, often carrying a negative connotation.
Examples
年轻人往往对事情的看法过于客观。
Niánqīngrén wǎngwǎng duì shìqíng de kànfǎ guòyú kèguān.
Young people often take an overly objective view of things.
由于他表现得过于自信,反而引起了考官的反感。
Yóuyú tā biǎoxiàn de guòyú zìxìn, fǎn'ér yǐnqǐ lě kǎoguān de fǎngǎn.
Because he acted too confident, he actually provoked the examiner's dislike instead.
对于这个问题,我们不需要过于担心。
Duìyú zhège wèntí, wǒmen bù xūyào guòyú dānxīn.
Regarding this issue, we don't need to be excessively worried.
Common mistakes
Do not add '了' (le) after '过于 + Adj'. While '太...了' is a common pattern, '过于' is used independently to denote excess.
Tip
过于 is usually followed by disyllabic words (two-character words). For mono-syllabic adjectives, '太' or '很' is more appropriate.
