JLPT N4
ようになる
Come to / Become able to
Structure
Verb dictionary form ようになる
How it works
This grammar point describes a gradual change from one state to another, or from not being able to do something to being able to do it. It is frequently used with the potential form of verbs to indicate a new ability or habit that has developed over time.
Examples
日本語でニュースが読めるようになりました。
I have become able to read the news in Japanese.
毎日、自分で料理を作るようになりました。
I've started to cook for myself every day (as a habit).
眼鏡をかければ、よく見えるようになりますよ。
If you wear glasses, you will be able to see well.
Common mistakes
Don't confuse this with 'ことになります', which indicates a decision made by an outside force or an established schedule, rather than a change in ability or habit.
Tip
To express that you have stopped a habit, use the negative form: Verb-nai form + ようになる (e.g., 走らないようになった - I stopped running).
