🇧🇷 Learn Portuguese
Learn Portuguese with Netflix
Before anything else, decide which Portuguese you are learning. Brazilian and European Portuguese share a written language and diverge sharply in pronunciation — European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels so heavily that learners trained on Brazilian audio often cannot follow it at all. Netflix lets you choose deliberately instead of absorbing whichever one you happened to meet first.
Why netflix works for Portuguese
You choose the variety on purpose
Brazilian series and Portuguese series sound different enough that mixing them early is genuinely confusing. Picking one and staying with it for a few months is worth doing.
Brazilian Portuguese is open-vowelled
Brazilian speech keeps its vowels full, which makes it markedly easier to parse by ear than European Portuguese — a reasonable default if you have no other preference.
Subtitles let a beginner start
Reading Portuguese is easy for anyone with Spanish, French or Italian. Hearing it is not. Subtitles convert existing reading ability into listening.
How it works in InputDojo
- 1
Import the Portuguese subtitle file, checking whether it is the Brazilian or European track.
- 2
Read it through and tap the words you heard but could not identify.
- 3
Rewatch and notice how many of them now land.
Where to start
3%

Cidade Invisível
Brazilian Portuguese with folklore vocabulary and a strong plot to pull you along.
European Portuguese productions
Choose these deliberately if Portugal is your target — the vowel reduction needs its own training.
Dubbed films you have already seen
A familiar plot removes the comprehension load entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Brazilian or European Portuguese — which should I learn?
Whichever matches where you are going. Brazil has far more speakers and media, and its full vowels make it easier to hear. European Portuguese is harder to parse at first but is the standard across Portugal and much of lusophone Africa.
Will learning one make the other unusable?
No. The written language is largely shared and the vocabulary overlaps heavily. What does not transfer automatically is listening, because the sound systems differ — that takes separate exposure.
Does InputDojo connect to Netflix?
No. There is no streaming integration. You import a subtitle file — SRT or VTT — and study that.
