Why is European Portuguese so much harder to hear?
Unstressed vowels are reduced very heavily, so words lose syllables in speech that the spelling still shows. Learners trained on Brazilian audio commonly find they understand almost nothing at first — this is expected, not a failure.
Should I mix both varieties?
Not at the beginning. Pick one for listening and stay with it for a few months; add the other once your ear is stable. Reading material can come from either.
What if there is no transcript?
It stays useful as listening practice, but for building vocabulary choose shows that publish one.
