Comparison and aspect arrive
The two additions that change what you can say are 比 comparisons and a fuller treatment of aspect — 了 for completion against 过 for experience, plus 在 and 正在 for ongoing action. English speakers tend to map these onto tenses and get them wrong for a long time, because Chinese is marking whether an action is complete or has been experienced rather than when it happened.
The first complements
HSK 2 introduces result and direction complements — 看见, 听懂, 出来, 回去. These are the beginning of the most distinctively Chinese part of the grammar and the part that takes longest, because the combinations are semi-idiomatic and cannot be assembled purely from rules. Meeting them repeatedly in context works considerably better than tabulating them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 了 and 过?
了 marks that an action is completed; 过 marks that it has been experienced at some point. Both get translated into English past tense, which is why the distinction takes a while to settle.
How many words does HSK 2 need?
The HSK 2.0 standard lists 300 cumulative words at level 2. The 3.0 standard raised the counts substantially.
Is HSK 2 enough to hold a conversation?
For transactional exchanges — ordering, directions, prices — largely yes. For open conversation, no; the vocabulary ceiling binds long before the grammar does.
