# 点 # 分

# diǎn # fēn

# hour # minute

Structure

[Number] + 点 + [Number] + 分

How it works

In Chinese, time is expressed starting with the largest unit (hour) followed by the smaller unit (minute). The word '点' (diǎn) means 'o'clock' or 'hour', and '分' (fēn) means 'minute'.

Examples

现在八点二十分。

Xiànzài bā diǎn èrshí fēn.

It is 8:20 now.

三点五分

sān diǎn wǔ fēn

3:05

我十点三十分睡觉。

Wǒ shí diǎn sānshí fēn shuìjiào.

I go to sleep at 10:30.

Common mistakes

Forcing the English word 'o'clock' at the end of the sentence; in Chinese, '点' must come immediately after the hour number.

Tip

When the hour is 2 o'clock, always use '两点' (liǎng diǎn) instead of '二点' (èr diǎn).
