HSK 7-9

七A八B

qī A bā B

All sorts of A and B; messy, various

Structure

七 + Noun/Verb + 八 + Noun/Verb

How it works

The '七A八B' (qī A bā B) structure is a common four-character idiom template used to describe a state of chaos, messiness, or a large variety of different things. The numbers seven and eight here do not represent literal quantities but rather signify 'all sorts of' or 'fragmented.'

Examples

大家七嘴八舌地讨论着这个新方案。

Dàjiā qīzuǐbāshé de tǎolùnzhe zhège xīn fāng'àn.

Everyone was discussing the new proposal all at once.

他把房间弄得乱七八糟的。

Tā bǎ fángjiān nòng de luànqībāzāo de.

He made his room a total mess.

这封信被撕得七零八落。

Zhè fēng xìn bèi sī de qīlíngbāluò.

The letter was torn into pieces/scattered fragments.

Common mistakes

Do not use '七A八B' to describe orderly variety; it almost always implies a sense of disorder, fragmentation, or excessive noise.

Tip

Memorize specific fixed idioms like 七嘴八舌, 乱七八糟, and 七手八脚, as you cannot freely substitute any word into the A and B slots.
