不妨 V

bùfáng V

it won't hurt to V

Structure

Subject (optional) + 不妨 + Verb / Verb Phrase

How it works

The adverb '不妨' is used to suggest that something is worth doing or that there is no harm in trying a particular action. It conveys a polite and persuasive tone, often translated as 'might as well' or 'it would do no harm to.'

Examples

既然你还没决定,不妨先向更有经验的人请教一下。

Jìrán nǐ hái méi juédìng, bùfáng xiān xiàng gèng yǒu jīngyàn de rén qǐngjiào yíxià.

Since you haven't decided yet, you might as well consult someone with more experience first.

这个问题,我们不妨换个角度来思考。

Zhège wèntí, wǒmen bùfáng huàn ge jiǎodù lái sīkǎo.

Regarding this issue, we might as well try thinking about it from a different perspective.

如果你感兴趣,不妨亲自去那里看一看。

Rúguǒ nǐ gǎn xìngqù, bùfáng qīnzì qù nàlǐ kàn yí kàn.

If you are interested, it wouldn't hurt to go there and take a look for yourself.

Common mistakes

Do not use '不妨' with negative verbs to say 'don't do something'; it is specifically for suggesting a positive or constructive action.

Tip

Think of '不妨' as a combination of '不' (not) and '妨碍' (hinder/harm). It literally means 'there is no hindrance to' doing something.
