HSK 6
不无
bùwú
not without
Structure
Subject + 不无 + Abstract Noun (e.g., 道理, 遗憾, 关系)
How it works
The structure '不无' (bùwú) is a double negative used to express a positive meaning in an understated or modest way. It usually precedes an abstract noun to indicate that a certain quality or feeling exists to some degree, similar to 'not without' or 'to have some' in English.
Examples
这种做法虽然冒险,但也不无成功的可能。
Zhè zhǒng zuòfǎ suīrán màoxiǎn, dàn yě bùwú chénggōng de kěnéng.
Although this approach is risky, it is not without the possibility of success.
听了他的话,我不无感慨地叹了口气。
Tīngle tā de huà, wǒ bùwú gǎnkǎi de tànle kǒu qì.
After hearing what he said, I sighed with some emotion.
这个问题与我们的生活不无关系。
Zhè ge wèntí yǔ wǒmen de shēnghuó bùwú guānxì.
This issue is not unrelated to our lives.
Common mistakes
Do not use '不无' with concrete objects; it must be followed by abstract nouns like '道理' (reason), '帮助' (help), or '关系' (relation).
Tip
Think of '不无' as a more formal and elegant way to say '有一点' (has a bit of) or '确实有' (certainly has).
