为(了)……起见,……

wèi(le)...qǐjiàn,...

For the sake of...; in the interest of...

Structure

为(了) + [Noun/Verb Phrase] + 起见,+ [Main Clause]

How it works

This formal structure is used to indicate the motive or purpose behind an action, typically focusing on safety, convenience, or careful consideration. It functions similarly to '为了', but is more formal and specific to reasoning in written or professional Chinese.

Examples

为了安全起见,进入施工现场必须佩戴安全帽。

Wèile ānquán qǐjiàn, jìnrù shīgōng xiànchǎng bìxū pèidài ānquánmào.

For the sake of safety, you must wear a hard hat when entering the construction site.

为谨慎起见,我们决定再对实验数据进行一次核对。

Wèi jǐnshèn qǐjiàn, wǒmen juédìng zài duì shíyàn shùjù jìnxíng yīcì héduì.

As a matter of prudence, we decided to check the experimental data once more.

为了方便起见,我们将会议地点改在了地铁站附近。

Wèile fāngbiàn qǐjiàn, wǒmen jiāng huìyì dìdiǎn gǎi zàile dìtiězhàn fùjìn.

For the sake of convenience, we moved the meeting location to near the subway station.

Common mistakes

Avoid using overly long or complex clauses inside the '为...起见' structure; it is best suited for two-character words like 安全, 慎重, or 方便.

Tip

Think of this as a 'just to be safe/sure' pattern. It is very commonly used with words related to caution (慎重, 谨慎) or practicality (方便, 公正).
