HSK 1
会 V
huì V
know how to V
Structure
Subject + 会 + Verb (+ Object)
How it works
The auxiliary verb '会' (huì) is used to indicate an acquired skill or an ability learned through study or practice. It is placed immediately before the main verb to show that the subject 'knows how to' perform that action.
Examples
我会说汉语。
Wǒ huì shuō Hànyǔ.
I can speak Chinese.
妈妈会做菜。
Māma huì zuò cài.
Mom knows how to cook.
你会写汉字吗?
Nǐ huì xiě Hànzì ma?
Do you know how to write Chinese characters?
Common mistakes
Using '会' to describe physical health or permission (like 'can I go?'). For general permission or situational possibility, '可以' (kěyǐ) or '能' (néng) is usually better.
Tip
Think of '会' as 'can' through learning. If you had to take a class or practice to do it, use '会'.
