何至于……

hé zhìyú...

How could it come to...; is it really that bad

Structure

Subject + 何至于 + (Verb Phrase / Clause) / 何至于 + (Subject) + ...

How it works

This rhetorical question structure is used to express that a situation or reaction is excessive, unnecessary, or far-fetched. It suggests that the degree of something has not reached—and should not reach—a certain extreme level.

Examples

我们只是意见不合,你何至于生气到要绝交?

Wǒmen zhǐshì yìjiàn bùhé, nǐ hé zhìyú shēngqì dào yào juéjiāo?

We just have a disagreement; how could it come to you being so angry as to break off our friendship?

这点小事,何至于让你如此大费周章?

Zhè diǎn xiǎoshì, hé zhìyú ràng nǐ rúcǐ dàfèizhōuzhāng?

It's just a small matter; is it really necessary for you to go to such great lengths?

他本意是好的,何至于被大家误解成这样?

Tā běnyì shì hǎo de, hé zhìyú bèi dàjiā wùjiě chéng zhèyàng?

His intention was good; how did it end up being so misunderstood by everyone?

Common mistakes

Users often confuse it with '至于' (as for/to the point of). Remember that '何至于' is always a rhetorical question implying that the current state is too extreme.

Tip

Think of '何' as '为什么' (why) and '至于' as '到这个地步' (to this point). It literally translates to 'Why [must it] go to this extent?'
