况且

kuàngqiě

Moreover; besides; what's more

Structure

Outcome/Situation + 况且 + Additional Reason

How it works

The conjunction '况且' is used to introduce an additional reason or circumstance that reinforces a previous point, often used in formal or argumentative contexts. It carries a stronger tone than '而且' and is frequently used alongside '也', '还', or '又' in the following clause.

Examples

这件衣服价格太贵,况且款式也不太适合你。

Zhè jiàn yīfu jiàgé tài guì, kuàngqiě kuǎnshì yě bù tài shìhé nǐ.

This piece of clothing is too expensive; besides, the style doesn't really suit you.

现在的任务已经很重了,况且我们人手又不足。

Xiànzài de rènwu yǐjīng hěn zhòng le, kuàngqiě wǒmen rénshǒu yòu bùzú.

The current task is already very heavy, and what's more, we are short-handed.

他本就聪明好学,况且还有著名老师的指点,进步自然很快。

Tā běn jiù cōngmíng hàoxué, kuàngqiě hái yǒu zhùmíng lǎoshī de zhǐdiǎn, jìnbù zìrán hěn kuài.

He is already clever and studious; moreover, with the guidance of a famous teacher, his progress is naturally fast.

Common mistakes

Don't confuse '况且' with '而且'. While '而且' adds general information, '况且' specifically adds a reinforcing reason or an 'even more so' condition to justify a conclusion.

Tip

Think of '况且' as 'besides' or 'on top of that' when you are trying to convince someone or explain why something is the case.
