Structure

Object + (对/对于) + Subject + 加以 + Disyllabic Verb

How it works

The word '加以' is a formal verb used before a disyllabic (two-syllable) abstract verb to indicate that a specific action or treatment is being applied to a preceding object. It often follows '对于' or '对' and is commonly used in written Chinese or formal speeches to elevate the tone. It acts similarly to 'to give' or 'to apply' in English.

Examples

这个问题非常复杂,我们需要进一步加以分析。

Zhège wèntí fēicháng fùzá, wǒmen xūyào jìnyībù jiāyǐ fēnxī.

This problem is very complex; we need to analyze it further.

对这些旧建筑,政府决定加以保护。

Duì zhèxiē jiù jiànzhù, zhèngfǔ juédìng jiāyǐ bǎohù.

The government decided to protect these old buildings.

任何不实传闻都应及时加以澄清。

Rènhé bùshí chuánwén dōu yīng jíshí jiāyǐ chéngqīng.

Any false rumors should be clarified in a timely manner.

Common mistakes

Using '加以' before a single-syllable verb (e.g., saying '加以看' instead of '加以观察') is incorrect; the following verb must have two or more syllables.

Tip

Think of '加以' as a formal way to say 'to do' or 'to give' for abstract nouns like 'consideration', 'criticism', 'analysis', or 'improvement'. If the verb is simple or concrete (like 'buy' or 'eat'), do not use '加以'.
