即便
jíbiàn
even if
Structure
即便 + [Hypothetical Situation] + 也/还 + [Main Clause]
How it works
即便 is a conjunction used to introduce a hypothetical concession, similar to 'even if' or 'even though.' It is often used in formal or written contexts to suggest that even if a certain situation were true, the following result or conclusion would remain unchanged.
Examples
即便明天下大雨,比赛也会照常进行。
Jíbiàn míngtiān xià dàyǔ, bǐsài yě huì zhàocháng jìnxíng.
Even if it rains heavily tomorrow, the match will proceed as scheduled.
即便你非常有经验,在这个项目中也不能掉以轻心。
Jíbiàn nǐ fēicháng yǒu jīngyàn, zài zhège xiàngmù zhōng yě bùnéng diàoyǐqīngxīn.
Even if you are very experienced, you cannot afford to be carless in this project.
即便面临巨大的压力,他依然保持着乐观的态度。
Jíbiàn miànlín jùdà de yālì, tā yīrán bǎochízhe lèguān de tàidù.
Even though he faces immense pressure, he still maintains an optimistic attitude.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to include the correlative word '也' (yě) or '还' (hái) in the second clause, which is necessary to complete the concession.
Tip
While '即便' and '即使' (jíshǐ) are largely interchangeable, '即便' is slightly more formal and more commonly found in written literature than in casual speech.
