即将

jíjiāng

about to

Structure

Subject + 即将 + Verb/Verb Phrase (+ 了)

How it works

即将 is a formal adverb used to indicate that an action or situation will happen very soon in the future. It is primarily used in written Chinese or formal speeches. Unlike the informal '就要', it often focuses on a specific turning point or significant event.

Examples

新的一年即将到来。

Xīn de yì nián jíjiāng dàolái.

The new year is about to arrive.

我即将离开这片深爱着的土地。

Wǒ jíjiāng líkāi zhè piàn shēn àizhe de tǔdì.

I am about to leave this land that I love deeply.

经过三年的努力,他即将完成这项研究。

Jīngguò sān nián de nǔlì, tā jíjiāng wánchéng zhè xiàng yánjiū.

After three years of effort, he is about to complete this research.

Common mistakes

Do not use '即将' with past tense markers or verbs that cannot represent a future event. It is also too formal for casual conversations like 'I'm about to eat'.

Tip

In the HSK 6 exam, '即将' is often used in news reports or formal announcements. If you see '了' at the end of the sentence, '即将' can still be used, but the structure '即将...了' is slightly less formal than '即将' used alone.
