HSK 1
和
hé
and
Structure
Noun/Pronoun A + 和 + Noun/Pronoun B
How it works
The word '和' (hé) is primarily used to connect two or more nouns or pronouns, similar to 'and' in English. It cannot be used to connect two separate sentences or clauses; its main function is to join items in a list.
Examples
我和他是朋友。
Wǒ hé tā shì péngyǒu.
He and I are friends.
我喜欢苹果和西瓜。
Wǒ xǐhuān píngguǒ hé xīguā.
I like apples and watermelons.
爸爸、妈妈和我都在家。
Bàba, māma hé wǒ dōu zài jiā.
Dad, mom and I are all at home.
Common mistakes
Using '和' to connect two complete sentences or two verbs (e.g., saying 'I eat and I drink' using '和').
Tip
Think of '和' as a 'link' only for objects or people. If you want to connect two actions, you usually don't need '和' at all; just state them in sequence.
