HSK 1

哪儿?

nǎr?

where

Structure

Subject + (在) + 哪儿?

How it works

The word '哪儿' (nǎr) is an interrogative pronoun used to ask about location. In a sentence, it typically replaces the place name or location word while keeping the rest of the sentence structure the same.

Examples

你在哪儿?

Nǐ zài nǎr?

Where are you?

你的家在哪儿?

Nǐ de jiā zài nǎr?

Where is your home?

他在哪儿工作?

Tā zài nǎr gōngzuò?

Where does he work?

Common mistakes

Do not add a question mark word like '吗' at the end of the sentence; '哪儿' is already a question word.

Tip

In Southern China, you will often hear '哪里' (nǎlǐ) instead of '哪儿' (nǎr). They mean exactly the same thing.
