哪怕 + Hypothetical Situation, (Subject) + 也 + Result
How it works
The conjunction '哪怕' is used to introduce a hypothetical concession, emphasizing that even in an extreme or unlikely situation, the result or determination remains unchanged. It is often used with '也', '还', or '也仍然' in the second clause to show resolve.
Examples
哪怕下大雨，我也要按时参加会议。
Nǎpà xià dàyǔ, wǒ yě yào ànshí cānjiā huìyì.
Even if it rains heavily, I will still attend the meeting on time.
为了实现梦想，哪怕再苦再累他也值得。
Wèile shíxiàn mèngxiǎng, nǎpà zài kǔ zài lèi tā yě zhídé.
To achieve his dream, it is worth it for him even if it is harder and more tiring.
哪怕只有百分之一的希望，我们也要付出百分之百的努力。
Nǎpà zhǐyǒu bǎifēnzhīyī de xīwàng, wǒmen yě yào fùchū bǎifēnzhībǎi de nǔlì.
Even if there is only a one percent hope, we must give a hundred percent effort.
Common mistakes
Students often forget to include '也' in the following clause; '哪怕' must almost always be paired with '也' to complete the logic.
Tip
Think of '哪怕' as a stronger version of '即使' (jíshǐ). While '即使' is a general 'even if', '哪怕' emphasizes a more extreme or 'worst-case' hypothesis.
