HSK 1

太 A (了)

tài A ( le)

too A

Structure

太 + Adjective + (了)

How it works

The structure '太 + Adjective + 了' is used to express that something is excessive or 'too' much. While '了' is often included at the end of the sentence to show a Change of State or emphasis, it can occasionally be omitted in negative sentences or specific contexts.

Examples

这个苹果太大了。

Zhège píngguǒ tài dà le.

This apple is too big.

老师太好了!

Lǎoshī tài hǎo le!

The teacher is so good!

太贵了,我不买。

Tài guì le, wǒ bù mǎi.

It's too expensive, I won't buy it.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to put the adjective between '太' and '了', or using '很' (very) and '太' (too) together in the same phrase.

Tip

In HSK 1, this structure isn't always negative; it can be used for positive extremes, like '太好了' (Great/Wonderful).
