How it works
如何 (rúhé) is a formal synonym for 怎么 (zěnme). It can be used as an interrogative pronoun to ask about the manner of an action or to inquire about the state or nature of a situation.
Examples
目前我们还没有讨论出如何解决这个问题。
Mùqián wǒmen hái méiyǒu tǎolùn chū rúhé jiějué zhè ge wèntí.
At present, we haven't yet discussed how to solve this problem.
无论结果如何，你都应该保持冷静。
Wúlùn jiéguǒ rúhé, nǐ dōu yīnggāi bǎochí lěngjìng.

Common mistakes
Students often use '如何' in very casual daily conversations where '怎么' would be more natural. '如何' is primarily used in written Chinese or formal speeches.
Tip
If '如何' is placed at the end of a sentence, it's asking for an opinion or the status of something (similar to 怎么样), whereas if it's before a verb, it asks for the method (similar to 怎么).
