Structure
Subject + 必定 + Verb / Adjective
How it works
The adverb '必定' (bìdìng) is used to express a strong sense of inevitability or logical certainty regarding a future event or a current situation. It carries a more formal and emphatic tone than '一定' (yīdìng), often used in written reports, formal speeches, or philosophical statements.
Examples
只要我们坚持不懈,必定能取得最终的胜利。
Zhǐyào wǒmen jiānchí bùxiè, bìdìng néng qǔdé zuìzhōng de shènglì.
As long as we persevere, we will surely achieve the final victory.
这种违背自然规律的做法,必定会产生严重的后果。
Zhè zhǒng wéibèi zìrán guīlǜ de zuòfǎ, bìdìng huì chǎnshēng yánzhòng de hòuguǒ.
This practice of violating natural laws will inevitably lead to serious consequences.
多年后再次相遇,他必定已经成家立业了。
Duōnián hòu zàicì xiāngyù, tā bìdìng yǐjīng chéngjiā lìyè le.
Meeting again after many years, he must have already started a family and a career.
Common mistakes
Unlike '一定', '必定' is not typically used in imperative sentences to give orders (e.g., you cannot say '你必定要来' to mean 'You must come').
Tip
Think of '必定' as 'inevitably.' It is often used in 'If... then...' (如果...必定) structures to describe a cause-and-effect relationship that cannot be avoided.
