罢了

bàle

That's all; nothing more; merely

Structure

(只不过/无非) + Statement + 罢了

How it works

The particle '罢了' (bàle) is used at the end of a sentence to downplay the significance of a statement, indicating that something is 'only,' 'merely,' or 'nothing more.' It often co-occurs with adverbs like '只不过,' '无非,' or '仅仅' to strengthen the dismissive or minimizing tone.

Examples

我不过是尽了点绵薄之力罢了,不足挂齿。

Wǒ bùguò shì jìnle diǎn miánbó zhī lì bàle, bùzú guàchǐ.

I merely contributed a meager effort, it's not worth mentioning.

他表面上很强硬,其实也就是虚张声势罢了。

Tā biǎomiàn shàng hěn qiángyìng, qíshí yě jiùshì xūzhāngshēngshì bàle.

He looks tough on the surface, but in fact, he is just bluffing.

这件事我只是听说而已,并无实据,你也别太当真,听听罢了。

Zhè jiàn shì wǒ zhǐshì tīngshuō éryǐ, bìng wú shíjù, nǐ yě bié tài dàngzhēn, tīngting bàle.

I only heard about this matter and have no evidence; don't take it too seriously, just listen and that's it.

Common mistakes

Mixing up '罢了' with '算了' (suànle). While '罢了' minimizes the importance of a fact, '算了' is used to drop an argument or stop an action, similar to 'forget it' or 'let it be.'

Tip

To make your Chinese sound more formal and sophisticated at the HSK 7-9 level, pair '罢了' with the structure '无非...罢了' when explaining that a complex situation is actually quite simple or mundane.
