要 (让) 我说 + [Opinion/Clause]
How it works
This phrase is used to introduce a personal opinion, often used when the speaker feels their perspective might be different or more direct than others'. It functions similarly to 'If you ask me' or 'In my view' but carries a tone of 'Since you really want to know what I think...'
Examples
要我说，这件事还是得让他自己去解决。
Yào wǒ shuō, zhè jiàn shì háishì děi ràng tā zìjǐ qù jiějué.
If you ask me, he still has to solve this matter himself.
要让我说呀，那个方案根本行不通。
Yào ràng wǒ shuō ya, nàge fāng'àn gēnběn xíng bù tōng.
If you really want my opinion, that plan won't work at all.
要让我说，你当初就不该放弃那个机会。
Yào ràng wǒ shuō, nǐ dāngchū jiù bù gāi fàngqì nàge jīhuì.
In my opinion, you shouldn't have given up that opportunity in the first place.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse this with '给我说' (tell me), as '要我说' is used to initiate the speaker's own output, not request information from others.
Tip
Adding the particle '呀' (ya) after '说' makes the tone sound more conversational and less confrontational when giving an honest opinion.
