HSK 1

请 V

qǐng V

please V

Structure

请 (qǐng) + Verb / Verb Phrase

How it works

The word 请 (qǐng) is used to express a polite request or invitation. It is placed before a verb or a verb phrase to make a command sound more respectful and courteous, similar to 'please' in English.

Examples

请喝茶。

Qǐng hē chá.

Please drink some tea.

请进。

Qǐng jìn.

Please come in.

请看黑板。

Qǐng kàn hēibǎn.

Please look at the blackboard.

Common mistakes

Placement error: Putting '请' after the verb or at the end of the sentence (e.g., saying 'Sit please' as '坐请').

Tip

In social contexts, '请' can also mean 'to invite' or 'to treat,' such as '我请你' (I'll treat you).
