Structure

Subject + (Adv.) + 越发 + Adj./Verb

How it works

The word '越发' (yuèfā) is an adverb used to indicate that a quality or situation has increased in degree, often due to a specific preceding event or circumstance. It is synonymous with '更加' (gèngjiā) but carries a more formal tone and often implies a cumulative development over time.

Examples

听了他的这番话,我心里越发感到不安。

Tīngle tā de zhè fān huà, wǒ xīnlǐ yuèfā gǎndào bù'ān.

After hearing his words, I felt all the more uneasy in my heart.

随着这种技术的发展,市场竞争也越发激烈了。

Suízhe zhè zhǒng jìshù de fāzhǎn, shìchǎng jìngzhēng yě yuèfā jīliè le.

With the development of this technology, market competition has become increasingly fierce.

雨后的空气越发清新。

Yǔ hòu de kōngqì yuèfā qīngxīn.

Common mistakes

Do not use '越发' in '越...越...' structures; while it means 'more and more', it cannot replace the first '越' in a comparative correlative sentence.

Tip

Think of '越发' as a more sophisticated version of '更加'. It works best when describing a steady increase or a reaction to a specific trigger.
