HSK 7-9

随即

suíjí

Immediately after; thereupon

Structure

Action 1 + ,(Subject) + 随即 + Action 2

How it works

The adverb '随即' is used to indicate that one action follows another almost immediately. It is more formal than '马上' or '立刻' and is frequently used in written Chinese or formal reports to describe a chronological succession of events.

Examples

他收到面试通知,随即订了去北京的机票。

Tā shōudào miànshì tōngzhī, suíjí dìngle qù Běijīng de jīpiào.

He received the interview notice and immediately booked a flight to Beijing.

警方接到报警,随即赶往现场进行调查。

Jǐngfāng jiēdào bàojǐng, suíjí gǎnwǎng xiànchǎng jìnxíng diàochá.

The police received the report and thereupon rushed to the scene to conduct an investigation.

会议结束后,相关文件随即在网上公布。

Huìyì jiéshù hòu, xiāngguān wénjiàn suíjí zài wǎngshàng gōngbù.

After the meeting ended, the relevant documents were immediately published online.

Common mistakes

Do not use '随即' to express a future intention or a command (e.g., 'Please do it immediately'); it is primarily used to describe actions that have already occurred or are part of a narrative sequence.

Tip

Think of '随即' as 'followed shortly by.' If you can replace it with '随后' or '紧接着' in a formal context, '随即' is likely appropriate.
