HSK 1

PLACE 没有 N

PLACE méiyǒu N

there isn't N at PLACE

Structure

Place + 没有 (méiyǒu) + Object/Noun

How it works

This structure is used to indicate non-existence or the absence of something in a specific location. Unlike '不' (bù), which is used for general negation, '没有' (méiyǒu) is the only way to negate existence (the verb '有').

Examples

学校没有老师。

Xuéxiào méiyǒu lǎoshī.

There are no teachers at the school.

椅子下面没有猫。

Yǐzi xiàmiàn méiyǒu māo.

There is no cat under the chair.

我家里没有咖啡。

Wǒ jiālǐ méiyǒu kāfēi.

There is no coffee in my house.

Common mistakes

Using '不有' (bù yǒu) instead of '没有' (méiyǒu). In Chinese, '有' can never be negated by '不'.

Tip

In this structure, the focus is on the place first. Think of it as 'At [Place] does not exist [Noun].'
