Q 呢

Q ne

I wonder

Structure

Question Word (谁/什么/哪儿...) + (Verb/Object) + 呢?

How it works

The particle '呢' (ne) can be added to the end of a question that already contains an interrogative word like 'who', 'what', or 'where'. It serves to soften the tone of the question, making it sound more conversational, inquisitive, or as if the speaker is wondering to themselves.

Examples

你在做什么呢?

Nǐ zài zuò shénme ne?

What are you doing (I wonder)?

谁在那儿呢?

Shéi zài nàr ne?

Who is over there (I wonder)?

我的书在哪儿呢?

Wǒ de shū zài nǎr ne?

Where is my book (I wonder)?

Common mistakes

Do not use '呢' (ne) and '吗' (ma) in the same sentence; '吗' is for yes/no questions, while '呢' softens existing question-word queries.

Tip

Think of this '呢' as a way to make your questions sound less blunt and more like a natural, wondering thought.
