HSK 1
V 吧。
V ba。
feel free to V
Structure
Verb / Verb + Object + 吧。
How it works
The particle '吧' (ba) is placed at the end of a sentence to indicate a suggestion, request, or to give permission. In this context, it softens the tone of a command, making it sound like an invitation or a friendly 'feel free to' instruction.
Examples
请喝茶吧。
Qǐng hē chá ba.
Please, feel free to drink some tea.
你吃吧。
Nǐ chī ba.
Go ahead and eat.
我们回家吧。
Wǒmen huí jiā ba.
Let's go home.
Common mistakes
Using '吧' for a direct, forceful command. Adding '吧' makes the sentence a suggestion; if you want to be very firm or strict, '吧' is usually omitted.
Tip
Think of '吧' as a 'softener.' It turns a cold instruction like 'Sit!' into a polite 'Why don't you sit?'
