HSK 3

V 好

V hǎo

done V-ing

Structure

Subject + Verb + 好 (+ Object)

How it works

The result complement '好' is used after a verb to indicate that an action is not only completed but also finished to a point of satisfaction or readiness. While '完' (wán) just means an action is finished, '好' implies that the subject is désormais 'ready' for use or the next step.

Examples

我已经准备好明天的考试了。

Wǒ yǐjīng zhǔnbèi hǎo míngtiān de kǎoshì le.

I have already prepared for tomorrow's exam.

衣服洗好了吗?

Yīfu xǐ hǎo le ma?

Are the clothes finished washing?

我们还没想好去哪儿旅游。

Wǒmen hái méi xiǎng hǎo qù nǎr lǚyóu.

We haven't decided where to travel yet.

Common mistakes

Using '完' (wán) when you mean you are 'ready'. For example, '我做完了' means 'I am finished', but '我做好了' means 'I am finished and it is ready'.

Tip

To negate this structure, always use '没' or '没有' before the verb, as it describes a result that has not yet been achieved.
