HSK 1

V O 了

V O le

have V'ed O

Structure

Subject + Verb + Object + 了 (le)

How it works

In HSK 1, placing '了' (le) at the end of a sentence indicates that an action has been completed or a new situation has emerged. When a verb is followed by an object, '了' typically appears at the very end of the sentence to mark the completion of the entire event. It functions as a modal particle rather than a tense marker.

Examples

他去学校了。

Tā qù xuéxiào le.

He went to school.

我喝茶了。

Wǒ hē chá le.

I drank tea.

妈妈买水果了。

Māma mǎi shuǐguǒ le.

Mom bought fruit.

Common mistakes

Using '了' for habitual actions or things that happen every day (e.g., saying '我每天喝茶了' is incorrect).

Tip

Think of this '了' as a 'change of state' or a 'finished' stamp at the end of your sentence.
