HSK 7-9

X yě hǎo, Y yě bà

Whether X or Y; be it X or Y

Structure

How it works

This structure is used to enumerate two or more possibilities or contrasting situations, indicating that the result or the speaker's attitude remains the same regardless of which one is true. It is often used in formal or literary contexts to show indifference or to emphasize a comprehensive conclusion.

Examples

Zànchéng yěhǎo, fǎnduì yěbà, zhè xiàng gǎigé dōu bìxū jìnxíng xiàqù.

Whether you agree or object, this reform must proceed.

Wèile míngshēng yěhǎo, wèile lìyì yěbà, tā zuìzhōng xuǎnzé le tuǒxié.

Be it for fame or for profit, he ultimately chose to compromise.

Shì wùhuì yěhǎo, shì gùyì de yěbà, wǒ xiànzài dōu bù xiǎng zài zhuījiū le.

Whether it was a misunderstanding or intentional, I don't want to look into it anymore.

Common mistakes

Mixing this formal structure with overly casual endings; it is typically followed by a clause containing '都' or '总' to summarize the consistent outcome.

Tip

You can use '也好... 也罢' exclusively, but mixing them as 'X也好,Y也罢' is a very common and stylistic way to show a range of possibilities.
