HSK 7-9

X了Y,Y了X

X le Y, Y le X

X did Y to, Y did X to; mutual action

Structure

Person A + Verb + 了 + Person B, Person B + Verb + 了 + Person A

How it works

This structure is used to describe a mutual, reciprocating, or bidirectional action between two parties. It emphasizes that the action performed by the first person upon the second is mirrored by the second person upon the first, often implying a balanced or cyclic interaction.

Examples

大家你看看我,我看看你,谁也没说话。

Dàjiā nǐ kànkàn wǒ, wǒ kànkàn nǐ, shéi yě méi shuōhuà.

Everyone looked at one another, and no one said a word.

他俩你推了我,我推了你,谁也不肯先让路。

Tā liǎ nǐ tuīle wǒ, wǒ tuīle nǐ, shéi yě bù kěn xiān rànglù.

The two of them pushed each other, and neither was willing to give way first.

辩论赛上,双方你驳了我,我驳了你,场面非常激烈。

Biànlùnsài shàng, shuāngfāng nǐ bōle wǒ, wǒ bōle nǐ, chǎngmiàn fēicháng jīliè.

In the debate, both sides refuted each other, and the scene was very intense.

Common mistakes

Avoid using this structure for non-interactive actions; both subjects must be capable of performing the same action onto each other.

Tip

In modern usage, even if the subjects aren't literally 'you' and 'I', the pronouns '你' and '我' are almost always used within the pattern to represent the two parties involved.
