JLPT N4

ことにする

Decide to ~

Structure

Verb dictionary form ことにする

How it works

This grammar point is used to express a personal decision or a choice made by the speaker. It focuses on the act of deciding to perform a specific action, typically using the dictionary form of a verb combined with 'koto ni suru'.

Examples

健康のために、毎日野菜を食べることにしました。

For my health, I have decided to eat vegetables every day.

来年、日本へ留学することにします。

I decide to study abroad in Japan next year.

高いから、この靴は買わないことにします。

Because they are expensive, I decide not to buy these shoes.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse '~koto ni suru' (personal decision) with '~koto ni naru', which indicates a decision made by an outside party or circumstances beyond your control.

Tip

To express a decision you made in the past that is still in effect as a habit or a rule, use the form '~koto ni shite iru'.
