JLPT N4
てみる
Try doing ~
Structure
Verb て-form みる
How it works
The grammar point 'てみる' is used to express the idea of trying something to see what it's like or what the result will be. It uses the て-form of a verb followed by みる (to see). Because it is a verb phrase, the 'みる' part can be conjugated into various forms like ~てみたい (want to try) or ~てみた (tried doing).
Examples
新しいレストランに行ってみます。
I will try going to the new restaurant (to see how it is).
この靴を履いてみてもいいですか。
May I try these shoes on?
日本料理を作ってみましたが、難しかったです。
I tried making Japanese food, but it was difficult.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse 'てみる' with the physical act of seeing; even if the action has nothing to do with eyes (like eating or listening), you still use 'みる'.
Tip
When you want to say 'I want to try doing...', simply change みる to the ~たい form: ~てみたい.
