JLPT N4
と (conditional)
Whenever / If (natural consequence)
Structure
Plain form と
How it works
The 'と' conditional is used to describe inevitable consequences, natural laws, or habitual actions. It implies that whenever Event A happens, Event B follows automatically or naturally. Unlike other conditionals, it cannot be followed by an expression of the speaker's will, request, or command.
Examples
春になると、桜が咲きます。
When spring comes, the cherry blossoms bloom.
このボタンを押すと、お釣りが出ます。
If you press this button, the change will come out.
まっすぐ行くと、右側に銀行があります。
If you go straight, there is a bank on the right side.
Common mistakes
Using 'と' for personal intentions or requests, such as saying '時間がたっぷりあると、映画を見ましょう' (incorrect). In this case, 'たら' should be used.
Tip
Think of 'と' as the '100% conditional.' Use it for things like machine operations, giving directions, or laws of nature where the result is certain.
