JLPT N4

なら

If (topic) / Speaking of

Structure

Noun/Plain form なら

How it works

The particle 'なら' is used to provide a suggestion, opinion, or judgment based on a topic introduced by the listener or a specific situation. It often carries the nuanced meaning of 'If that's the case' or 'Speaking of [topic].' Unlike other conditionals, it doesn't necessarily imply a cause-and-effect sequence in time.

Examples

ひらがななら書けます。

If it's hiragana, I can write it.

京都へ行くなら、秋が一番いいですよ。

If you are going to Kyoto, autumn is the best time.

明日が雨なら、試合は中止です。

If it rains tomorrow, the match will be canceled.

Common mistakes

Don't confuse 'なら' with '~たら'. While '~たら' focus on what happens after an action, 'なら' is used to give advice or opinions based on a condition already established in the conversation.

Tip

Think of 'なら' as setting a specific 'frame' for your answer. It is very useful when someone asks 'Can you do X?' and you want to reply 'I can't do X, but I can do Y (Yならできます).'
