JLPT N4

~させられる

Be made to do (passive causative)

Structure

Verb (causative form) + られる (passive form)

How it works

This grammar is used to express that someone is forced or made to do an action by another person. It combines the causative and passive forms.

Examples

先生に漢字をたくさん書かせられました。

I was made to write many kanji by the teacher.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with simple passive or simple causative. This form always implies being forced.

Tip

Think of it as 'cause to do' + 'be done'. The resulting action is something the subject didn't want to do.
