JLPT N4

~なくてもいい

Don't have to, don't need to

Structure

Verb (ない-form, drop い) + くてもいい

How it works

This grammar is used to express that an action is not necessary or that one is permitted not to do something. It gives a sense of relief or option.

Examples

今日は学校に行かなくてもいいです。

You don't have to go to school today.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with ~てはいけない (must not do) or ~なければならない (must do).

Tip

Break it down: ない (negative) + てもいい (even if X, it's good). So, 'even if you don't do X, it's fine'.
