How many grammar points are in HSK 6?

InputDojo covers 42 HSK 6 grammar points, the smallest set of any level. Under the 2.0 standard HSK 6 was the top of the ladder and its 5,000-word list, not its grammar, is what the exam is really testing.

Literary and classical residue

The remaining patterns are largely written-register and carry traces of classical Chinese: 之, 其, 所, 以及 and the formal connectives built from them. They are common in editorials and formal writing and rare in speech, so they are acquired by reading published prose rather than by conversation.

The exam is about speed

HSK 6 gives you a large volume of text and not much time. Candidates who fail rarely do so because they did not recognise a structure; they run out of time. That makes reading speed the thing worth training, and reading speed comes from having read a lot, not from having reviewed the list again.

Frequently asked questions

Is HSK 6 fluent?

HSK 6 tests reading and listening, and under the 2.0 standard it was the highest level. It does not test speaking, so it is not a fluency certificate.

What replaced HSK 6 as the top level?

The HSK 3.0 standard introduced a nine-level structure in which levels 7 to 9 sit above the old ladder and are examined together.

How long does HSK 6 take?

Several years of consistent study for most learners. The 5,000-word requirement is the dominant cost.
