Why this band is so much larger
It is three levels examined as one, so the count spans what would elsewhere be spread across three sets. It also reaches into registers the older HSK never covered — academic writing, formal correspondence, literary prose — which is the point of the 3.0 restructure. The old six-level ladder topped out below what a university student or professional actually needs.
A different kind of exam
HSK 7-9 tests speaking and writing alongside reading and listening, which none of the lower levels do. Preparation that consists of recognising patterns will not carry it. This is the first HSK level at which you have to produce Chinese under examination conditions rather than identify it.
