Structure
Number + (Number + 1) + Measure Word + Noun
How it works
To express an approximate number in Chinese, you can place two consecutive digits together. This structure indicates that the actual amount is roughly between the two consecutive numbers mentioned.
Examples
我每天学习一两个小时汉语。
Wǒ měitiān xuéxí yī liǎng gè xiǎoshí Hànyǔ.
I study Chinese for one or two hours every day.
这个书包要两三百块钱。
Zhège shūbāo yào liǎng sān bǎi kuài qián.
This schoolbag costs two or three hundred yuan.
学校里有七八个留学生。
Xuéxiào lǐ yǒu qī bā gè liúxuéshēng.
There are seven or eight international students in the school.
Common mistakes
Do not use '和' (and) or '或' (or) between the two numbers; simply place them side-by-side.
Tip
When using the numbers 1 and 2 for approximation, use '一两' (yī liǎng), but for 2 and 3, use '两三' (liǎng sān) instead of '二三'.
