再 V (future)

zài V

again (later)

Structure

Subject + (Time) + 再 + Verb + (Object)

How it works

The adverb '再' (zài) is used to indicate that an action will be repeated or continued in the future. Unlike '又' (yòu), which typically refers to a repeated action that has already happened, '再' is used for actions that have not yet occurred or are planned.

Examples

我们明天再谈这个问题吧。

Wǒmen míngtiān zài tán zhège wèntí ba.

Let's talk about this problem again tomorrow.

请再说一遍,我没听清楚。

Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn, wǒ méi tīng qīngchu.

Please say it again, I didn't hear clearly.

我先吃饭,然后再做作业。

Wǒ xiān chīfàn, ránhòu zài zuò zuòyè.

I will eat first, then do my homework.

Common mistakes

Using '再' for past events, e.g., saying '他昨天再来了' instead of '他昨天又来了'.

Tip

Think of '再' as 'another time in the future' and '又' as 'another time in the past'.
