HSK 3

又 V

yòu V

(did) again

Structure

Subject + 又 + Verb (+ 了)

How it works

The adverb '又' (yòu) is used to indicate that an action has happened again in the past or as a recurring habitual event. Unlike '再' (zài), which is used for future occurrences, '又' usually describes events that have already taken place.

Examples

你怎么又买了一件衣服?

Nǐ zěnme yòu mǎile yī jiàn yīfú?

How come you bought another piece of clothing again?

周未他又去图书馆学习了。

Zhōumò tā yòu qù túshūguǎn xuéxí le.

He went to the library to study again this weekend.

这个词我又不记得了。

Zhège cí wǒ yòu bù jìde le.

I've forgotten this word again.

Common mistakes

Using '又' to talk about a future action (e.g., saying '我明天又去' instead of '我明天再去').

Tip

Think of '又' for the past or present (it already happened) and '再' for the future (it's going to happen).
